The last decade has seen an extremely rapid proliferation of Information and Communication Technology throughout the world. ICT has touched every aspect of our lives including how we access information, the way we communicate with each other, and how we carry out research and development. Even gaming and entertainment have changed radically. So it is hardly surprising that education delivery is also impacted. Ready availability of multimedia computers and Internet has opened up several interesting teaching-learning possibilities hitherto considered very difficult, if not altogether impossible. For example, can students of Civics and History plan cities and indeed civilizations and watch them flourish or decay. Can we exploit multimedia capabilities of computers to help students perform science experiments in a more interesting and interactive fashion? Can they see the impact of geography and geological phenomena on politics and sociology? Can students improve their pronunciation and accent with using computer software? Do we still need to teach subjects in isolation? It is not an exaggeration to say that ICT is proving to be biggest influencing factor on education since the invention of the printing press.
While these scenarios are indeed exciting, it is going to take a generation of ICT savvy teachers to make this happen. Also, technology-enabled classrooms and tech savvy students of today and tomorrow are going to make interesting demands on the teaching community. The teacher will be expected to have in-depth knowledge of computers, software, networks, PDAs, as well as online instructional design methodologies and so on. All these and several other pedagogical and technical issues will be addressed in the three workshops announced by The NIT institute of Information Technology. These programs aim at creating highly technology savvy teachers and developers of learning materials - computer/web based training programs.

About the Workshops:

Productivity Tools for Teachers:
Given the IT-infused nature of all our environments, be it schools, homes, or workplace, it is imperative that the teaching community keeps itself abreast of tools that enhance their personal and group productivity. This course enables participants to familiarize themselves with Information & Communication Technology (ICT) products with the potential to enhance personal and group productivity. You will be working with ICT tools for project planning, statistical analysis, collaborative features of word processors and databases. This workshop will give you hands-on experience in handling computer-based multimedia including audio and video digitization and editing. The teaching techniques used will be primarily learning by doing and collaborative learning wherein the participants learn to use the technologies in simulated professional situations.

ICET (Information, Communication and Entertainment Technologies) and Technology enhanced Learning:
Information, Communication and Entertainment Technologies (ICET) have impacted learning and teaching not in terms of just doing things differently and more efficiently but also to do different things altogether. The course attempts to give the participants an awareness of ICET (Information, Communication and Entertainment Technologies) as applied to education by enabling them to have a hands-on experience of some of the technologies such as Computer-Assisted Science Experimentation, Minimally Invasive Education, Computer Aided Language Learning, Games in Learning, Learning Management Systems, etc. This hands-on approach will provide a scaffold to build their knowledge about ICET technologies and enhance considerably their ability to identify and use these technologies in their curriculum.

e-Learning Technologies:
e-Learning refers to all forms of learning and teaching that uses the electronic medium, be it the Internet or the stand-alone computer. Of late e-learning is in focus due to several advantages it offers – especially as it enables anytime, anywhere and self-paced learning. The major driver for e-learning has been corporate groups for their organizational training. Currently all players in education and training – school, universities, training institutes are trying to integrate e-learning into their offerings. The course attempts to give the participants a comprehensive understanding of e-learning by covering all aspects of e-learning such as content creation and management, content delivery and learning management, assessment creation and management, etc. The students will have hands-on experience of some of the learning management technologies such as ElementK, Moodle, etc.
