With the growing importance of the Internet, the need for online education over the Web also increased. To fulfil this requirement, CRCS built up on the core competency of NIIT, that is education, and ventured into the world of virtual environment. It designed an e-learning model that led to the development of NetVarsity, the world’s first virtual university.

NetVarsity.com is an online learning portal that began in 1996 as an experiment in e-learning at CRCS. It is based on the principle of distributed learning and specialises in building functional skills. It provides training in computers, system management and allied areas to professionals in any discipline.
In 1997, NetVarsity was launched as a commercial venture by NIIT that was spun-off in the year 2000 as NIIT Online Learning Ltd., a wholly owned subsidiary of NIIT Ltd.
CRCS is no longer involved in the development and maintenance of NetVarsity but is still responsible for First AccessTM, a section of the NetVarsity website that provides information on the latest technological advancements and buzzwords. NetVarsity is an example of the R&D work at CRCS that has developed into a business for NIIT.
This project reflects the efforts of CRCS in the area of Internet technology.
