CERTIFICATE COURSE IN BIOINFORMATICS AND COMPUTATIONAL BIOLOGY
About the programme
Bioinformatics and Computational Biology bring together expertise
from diverse fields such as Computers, Information Technology, Mathematics,
Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Medicine. Whereas in a restrictive
definition, Bioinformatics is concerned with creation, management
and application of biological databases, Computational Biology is
concerned with structure, dynamics, interaction and function of biomolecules.
Availability of genome sequences of humans, plants and pathogens are
beginning to lead to wholly unanticipated new applications of Bioinformatics
and Computational Biology in both health care and agriculture.
Base by base mapping of the DNA content in a cell has heralded a new
and exciting scientific endeavour of unprecedented magnitude, the
culmination of which is a molecular level understanding of the entire
organism and its response to perturbations, in essence life at a molecular
level.
The diversity of disciplines encompassed by Bioinformatics underscores
the necessity for specialized training programmes targeting, (a) scientists
and executives in Biotech., Pharma and Agro industries to facilitate
a more informed decision making in their R& D activities and (b)
the next generation of students and scientists to initiate them into
research in Bioinformatics.
The programme introduces basic concepts and tools in Bioinformatics
highlighting some of the outstanding research problems and promises
thereof. Although intense, due to the short-term nature of the course,
the goal is not to impart expertise but acquaintance. The IT modules
of the course are offered at NIIT and the Bioinformatics modules at
the Supercomputing Facility.
Course Overview
Bioinformatics is the study of the inherent structure of biological
information and biological systems. It brings together the avalanche
of systematic biological data (e.g. genomes) with the analytic theory
and practical tools of mathematics and computer science.
A joint certification by NIIT and IIT Delhi, this is a six-month course
that leads to a certificate course in Bioinformatics and Computational
Biology.
The course aims to cover all the relevant IT technologies helpful
in the search and analysis done in the field of Bioinformatics and
the Bio- related subjects. Spread over 6 months, the programme includes
240 hours of intense training on IT, 96 hours on Fundamentals of Modern
biology, Bioinformatics & Computational Biology & 144 hours
of on-site training at the Supercomputing Facility for Bioinformatics
& Computational Biology.
