Vehicle Tracking Using GPS, GIS and GSM

Since its inception, CRCS has been continuously exploring the area of wireless technology. GPS and GSM are the current subjects of interest in this area. To effectively use GPS and GSM we built a Vehicle Tracking System to track the position and velocity of vehicles on national highways and in remote areas.

Vehicle Tracking involves reporting of current position and velocity of the vehicle (latitude, longitude and altitude) over a GSM (cellular) data link. The setup on the vehicle consists of a Global Position System (GPS) receiver, a GSM modem and a call controller. The base station consists of landline modem(s) and GIS workstation. The information about the vehicle is received at a base station over normal telephone lines and is then displayed on a PC based map.

The extensive availability of GSM network in India and the roaming facility ensure that vehicle/fleets can be tracked even on the national highways and in many remote areas.
