Most patients forget to take medicines on time. They also find it difficult to keep track of what medicine to take and when. In such cases it also becomes difficult for the doctor to monitor the patient’s progress. CRCS has solved this problem by designing the Intelligent Pillbox, a device for patients who must take their medicines at precise intervals and/or for extended periods of time. It also helps the doctors in monitoring the medicine consumption of the patient.

The Intelligent Pillbox
helps the patients to not only take medicines on time but also as
per the prescription. It is quite easy to operate. The doctor writes
the prescription on the computer and then downloads it on the pillbox
using one of the ports of the computer (serial, parallel or USB).
The pillbox receives and stores the prescription in a non-volatile
memory. This ensures that the prescription stays in the memory of
the pillbox even if batteries are removed or replaced.
The pillbox consists of several compartments for storing medicines.
Each compartment has a small lamp. The pillbox also has a master indicator
lamp and an audio device. The audio device generates an audio alarm
either in human voice or as a beep at the time when medicine needs
to be taken. If the box is not opened then the master indicator lamp
remains on and the pillbox stores the fact that a dose has been skipped.
Thus, it helps the doctor to check if the patient has been taking
medicines as per the prescription.
The higher versions of the pillbox can be developed to have a built-in
modem. This will allow the pillbox to send its information to a website.
This will help the doctor in monitoring the medicine consumption and/or
modifying the dosage, if required, of several pillboxes simultaneously.
This cognitive device from CRCS is ideal for hospitals as it allows
the doctors to monitor several patients at a time. Especially the
forgetful ones!
As the product as been conceptualized, designed and developed at CRCS,
we have applied for a patent
for it.
